AUTHOR’S PROFIT / ROYALTY

This is the most important question for any author and hence it needs a detailed explanation w.r.t all the costs involved in selling the book. So let’s directly get to the point:

How much royalty will I get on sale of my PHYSICAL BOOK?
Your royalty depends on the following parameters:

  • Printing Cost of the Book
  • Channel commission where you are selling the book (e.g. Amazon, Bookstore, Publisher Site, Author Website etc.)
  • Publisher’s Commission / Handling Fee etc.
  • Shipping charges as and where applicable

The basic formula for calculating your royalty as an author is as follows:
Author’s Royalty = Sale Price – (Printing Cost + Channel Commission* + Publisher’s Commission (10%) + Shipping Charges**)

* Channel Commission: The channel commission of different channels is as follows:

  • Amazon India: ~20%
  • Flipkart: ~20%
  • Publisher’s Site: 5%
  • Your own i.e. Author’s Website: 0%
  • Retail Stores: ~50%

** Shipping charges are applicable whenever a physical book is sold through the above online channels. There are 3 ways you can take care of this shipping charge:

  • - Pass on this shipping charge to the customer. In this case, when a customer buys the book, he / she will have to pay the MRP of the book plus the shipping charge.
  • - Make the shipping free for the customer. Please note that in this case the shipping charges will have to be deducted from your royalty.
  • - The other option is that you take the middle path i.e. make the customer pay a part for the shipping cost and bear the remaining shipping fee yourself.

Practical Scenario: Let’s look at a typical scenario of a book with the following specifications:

  • Book Size: 6 by 9 inches
  • No of pages: 250 (B/W)
  • Format: Paperback
  • Cover: Colored
  • MRP: Rs 275/-
  • Printing Cost: Rs 108/-

As described previously, your royalty across various channels will be calculated based on the formula:

Author’s Royalty = Sale Price – (Printing Cost + Channel Commission* + Publisher’s Commission (10%) + Shipping Charges**)

Channel 1: Amazon India / Flipkart: ~20% commission
Assumptions:

  • - You, as an author, are not bearing any shipping charge. It will be borne by the buyer. So effectively the customer will be paying the following to get the book: MRP (Rs 275/-) + Shipping Charge (Rs 75/-) = Rs 350/-
  • - MRP is Rs 275/-. If you change the increase / decrease the MRP, your royalty will increase / decrease accordingly. Your royalty will be as follows: Your Royalty = Rs 275 – (Rs 108 + Rs 55 + Rs 27.5 + 0) = Rs 84.5/- Your Royalty % = ~30% of the MRP.

  • Channel 2: Bookstore: ~50% commission
    Assumptions:
    - The MRP of the book in the bookstore should be same as the total amount the customer would pay online i.e. Rs 350/-. Customer Buying Price: MRP (Rs 350/-) Your royalty will be as follows: Your Royalty = Rs 350 – (108 + 175 + 35)
    = Rs 32/-
Your Royalty % = ~10% of the MRP.

    Channel 3: Publisher’s Website: ~5% commission

    Assumptions:

    • - You, as an author, are not bearing any shipping charge. It will be borne by the buyer. So effectively the customer will be paying the following to get the book:
    • MRP (Rs 275/-) + Shipping Charge (Rs 75/-) = Rs 350/- - MRP is Rs 275/-. If you change the increase / decrease the MRP, your royalty will increase / decrease accordingly. Your royalty will be as follows: Your Royalty = Rs 275 – (Rs 108 + Rs 13.75 + Rs 27.5 + 0) = Rs 125.75/- Your Royalty % = ~45% of the MRP.

How much royalty will I get on sale of my EBOOK? Your ebook royalty depends on the following parameters:

    - Channel commission where you are selling the book (e.g. Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, Google Books etc.)
    - Publisher’s Commission

The basic formula for calculating your royalty as an author is as follows: Author’s Royalty = Sale Price – (Channel Commission* + Publisher’s Commission (10%))

    * Channel Commission: The channel commission of different channels is as follows:
    - Kindle: ~30-70% - If your ebook is exclusively available on Kindle i.e. it is not available on any other platform, then Kindle’s commission is 30% of the MRP. However if the ebook is not exclusive to Kindle i.e. it is listed on any of the other ebook platforms, then Kindle’s commission is 70%
    - Kobo: ~30%
    - Barnes and Noble: 30%
    - Apple Books: 30%
    - Google Books: 30%

Hence the Author’s Ebook Royalty% will be as follows: - Kindle: 20-60%
    - Kobo: ~60%
    - Barnes and Noble: ~60%
    - Apple Books: ~60%
    - Google Books: ~60%

How much royalty will I get on sale of my AUDIOBOOK?

Your audiobook royalty depends on the following parameters:
    - Channel commission where you are selling the book (e.g. Google Audio Books, Apple Books, Storytel, Audible etc.)

    - Publisher’s Commission

The basic formula for calculating your royalty as an author is as follows:
    Author’s Royalty = Sale Price – (Channel Commission* + Publisher’s Commission (10%))
    * Channel Commission: The channel commission of the all the following channels is ~50%
    - Google Audio Books
    - Apple Books
    - Storytel
    - Audible

Hence the Author’s Audiobook Royalty% will be: 40%
