FAQs

As the name suggests, self publishing is where the Author has complete control over the the entire designing and production process of the book as well as retains 100% copyright. He / she may use the expertise and experience of self publishers (like Goya Publishing) to help with the entire design, production and marketing process.

Self Publishing is not a magic pill. It does not guarantee you that your book will be the next best seller. Self publishing is only a way to solve the following problems which 1st time authors generally have to face when going to the traditional publishers -

  • Waiting for a long period of time to get any response (typical wait time is 4-6 months, and that too the first typical response is a ‘No’)
  • Depending on that sole editor to decide the future of their book (the biases and experiences of the editor may work for / against the book)
  • Having no control over their work (there have been instances where the content / style has been changed as per the whims and fancies of the traditional publisher)
  • Having no transparency over the sales / royalty figures (the Author may have to wait for 3-6 months to know how many copies of the book were sold)
  • The whole idea of self publishing is to enable the Author to have more control and transparency at each and every step of the publishing, designing, production sales of the book.

Following is a list of some of the famous international authors who started out with self publishing:

  • Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad)
  • Mark Twain (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)
  • E L James (50 Shades of Grey)
  • Margaret Atwood (Double Persephone)
  • John Grisham (A Time to Kill)
  • Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol)
  • Walt Whitman (Leaves of Grass)

Nearer home, here is a list of some of the famous Indian authors who self published:

  • Ashwin Sanghi (The Rozabal Line)
  • Amish Tripathi (The Immortals of Meluha)
  • Adithya Iyer (The Great Indian Obsession)
  • Inderjit Kaur (Kaleidoscope)

Publishing has become easier over the past 10 years but marketing and selling the book requires a focussed approach from both the Author and the Publisher. Following are some of the marketing activities which we do -

  • FB & Insta Page Setup
  • Author Interview
  • Book Video Trailer
  • Online Poster
  • Press Release
  • Social Media Reviews
  • Amazon Reviews
  • Author Page Setup - Amazon & Goodreads
  • Amazon Prime Placement
  • Amazon Look Inside Preview
PS: All the above will help in driving more sales provided the content and the MRP of the book is right for the intended audience.

Goya Publishing was borne out of the need of 1st time authors who were looking for a credible and trustworthy partner who could help them navigate the world of publishing and marketing a book. If you are here reading this, you are here for a reason. Be it that you no longer want to wait for a traditional publisher to respond to your mails or you probably just want to have more control of how your final published book looks and feels like.

Whatever be the reason let us assure you that you are at the right place. We do not guarantee that we will make you a best-selling author. What we can guarantee, however, is to provide you with that chance by converting your manuscript into a highly marketable published book.

Once the agreement is executed, a publishing manager is assigned to the Author who would be helping / guiding / updating the Author with each and every step of the publishing process. The publishing manager would be your go to person for any kind of issue / concerns.

Once the Author decided to go ahead with the publishing process, an Author & Publisher agreement is signed which clearly specifies the following -

  • Complete Confidentiality of the work of the Author till the copyright is applied and the book is available in the public domain
  • Package / Services which the Author has opted for
  • Timeline agreed upon
  • Payment Instalment Plan
The above agreement is non-binding agreement for the Author I.e. in case the Author wants to change the publisher, he / she can do so by sending an email to Goya Publishing.

The publishing process involves the following steps:

  • Author submitting sample pages of the manuscript
  • After approval of the sample pages, Author to decide on the package / services
  • Executing the Author & Publishing Agreement
  • Author to share the complete manuscript
  • Publisher to share sample cover design and inner layout based on the agreed font / style
  • Publisher to apply for the book’s ISBN (in the name of the Author)
  • Publisher to share the final cover and inside files to the Author for approval
  • Publisher to send the book for print and get the book listed on the distribution platforms
  • Publisher to start the marketing and promotional activities

The packages are designed in order to help the author get his / her manuscript converted into a publishable book. They include services like Designing (Cover, Inner), ISBN & Copyright Registration (in the name of the Author), Editing, Distribution and Marketing. Depending on the extent of activities / services required, you can choose between the Standard and Enhanced package.

Yes, just login into your account and customise / choose the services you want to opt for.

The copyright of the book will be registered in the name of the Author.

For physical copies i.e. paperback / hardcover versions of the book, we follow a POD (printing small lot of 20-30 copies) model for authors who are starting out and want to see some feedback / reviews on the book. or do bulk printing (offset / typical print run of 1000 copies). For books which are having good and consistent sales, we follow the Offset (bulk printing) model so as to enable instant delivery and higher royalty for the Author.

Currently, Physical book and Ebook are the highest selling formats and each one has its own audience. So it is not a question of either physical book OR ebook but rather physical book AND ebook. In terms of growth rate, Audio books is the fastest growing segment and should be seriously considered by Authors, especially in Fiction, Poetry, Self Help genres.

Building a trustworthy and transparent relationship between the Author and the Publisher is of paramount importance. We at Goya Publishing ensure transparency by providing the following to the Author:

  • Sales Dashboard & Royalty Payout:
  • The Author will be provided with a login on the Goya website where he / she can track the book sales and the royalty due to be paid to him / her. The Author has the option of withdrawing the royalty once every week.
  • Sales Notification:
  • An email notification will be sent to the Author within 24 hours of a book sale (physical / ebook / audio)
  • Live Sharing of Publisher’s Dashboard:
  • To make sales & royalty information more transparent & trustworthy, the Author has the option of having a live session (zoom, anydesk) with our team whereby the Author can look at the live data on Goya’s dashboard with the various distribution platforms i.e. Amazon, Kindle, Flipkart.

Author’s royalty is paid out at the end of each month for all the orders which had been confirmed in the previous month. E.g. For all the orders confirmed till 30th April, royalty will be paid out on 31st May.

All the distribution platforms (e.g. Amazon, Flipkart etc) allow upto 10-20 days for customers to return the book. The 1 month period is to take all the returns & cancellations into consideration before paying out the royalty to the Author.

Please refer to our Royalty Calculator to know how much can the Author make per copy sold of the book.

The Author has the final authority to decide the MRP of the book. The Publisher provides a suggestive MRP to the Author based on its experience and the market trend.

The MRP of the book is decided based on various factors but the two most important to consider are :

  • What is the general MRP of similar kind / genre of books?
  • Who is the target audience for the book (young students, children, professionals, institutions etc)?
The above 2 points will give us a fair idea as to what would be competitive MRP of the book.

The first step is to submit a sample (5-10 pages in word or pdf format) of your manuscript after creating your Author account. Please click on ‘Register’ to create your account.
